Moose Jaw's Darrell Crabbe, the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation was part of a recent roundtable meeting with the Prime Minister and other members of the hunting, angling and conservation community.

Crabbe tells us several issues including the Long Gun registry, the Navigable Waters Act and the Canadian Wildlife Service were discussed during the 40 minute meeting. "We just talked about some of the economic benefits and spinoffs from hunting and angling in Canada and I had a chance to chat with him about chronic wasting disease, which was good. I guess, my overall take of the meeting is that I was quite surprised how up to speed and prepared to discuss the issues he was", Crabbe said.

"The number one issue was the long-gun registry, we discussed that fairly at length. Other issues on the national stage that ourselves and somewhat of a loose coalition with other wildlife associations across Canada have been working on is hunting, fishing and trapping rights protection. It's a big issue in the States and certainly something we have been looking forward to achieving for a number of years". Crabbe is expecting movement on some of the issues, citing the introduction of the bill into the Senate to eliminate the requirement for Canadians to register their non-restricted long guns.

The March 21st meeting was hosted by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters in Toronto in conjunction with their 81st Annual Convention. The Prime Minister was the Keynote Speaker of the Convention.
