View Full Version : Taxidermy in Alberta
A few questions...
Is there a website for the association for Alberta Taxidermists.
What are the rules in Alberta for amateur taxidermists (ie. hobbyists?)
What if any, are the licensing requirements. At what point does a taxidermist (amateur or professional) require a license / permit?

1. I think so. I think Joey Busetto was president at one time.
2. None really, other than having proper paperwork for the animals you are working on.
3. When you start charging. You must also have a workshop that is also accesable without going through your residence. Ie seperate door, stand alone building. Hows the garage going.
Don't really know what I'm talking about so could be wrong on most of the above.

I'm pretty sure Alberta is the same as SK. If you are charging anything for it, you need a permit which you can get from fish and wildlife. It costs only $20/year. Once you have it you can be inspected by fish and wildlife at any time, and you will need to keep records on everything.
If you're doing it for yourself or for free, none of this is needed.
If you are advertising and in town or city you will need a business permit from the city.

I was told that If I had someone elses game animal, say a deer. If I never had the proper licenses I could be fined for unlawfull possesion.
That was for taxidermy work, and I was given a warning from a F&W officer.
The license is $5, so that's not a biggie. The real problem is that you can't use your residence to do the work. It has to be a detached garage at the very least. That's not very conducive to the hobbyist that wants to mount a couple deer a year for friends. Hopefully I'll be crossing paths with a member of the professional association sometime and I'll be able to quiz him for some accurate info.
