I want to get into the 3D scene this coming season. I have shot fun shoots and so on in the past, but never serious 3D. My question is, what does one need to get started. Any tips are appreciated.

All you need is your bow hunting set up and the desire to have fun! That is all....You don't have to be competitive unless you want to....

I love doing the 3-D Shoots and it's a blast....Some people will help you that you are shooting with when you tell them you are new at this....Trust me....Just have fun at them and you will get better and better.....But it's all about the fun..

Where are you from Tatonka?

Thanks Warden. I am from the Calgary area. Is there any places close by that have winter 3D leauges or funshoots?

Tat. I am in the same boat, Have shot for fun and bragging rights, but never competitively. Lots of people on the boards here will help you out. Good luck.

Tatonka, both JimBows and Calgary Archery Centre have winter indoor 3D shoots. Jims are on a weekly basis. Go try them, have fun, and gain some experience. I will be shooting as many as I can this winter, so I will see ya there!

Tatonka,

You will find the local southern AB. 3D season crazy.
Trust me there are no shortages of shoots to go to.
And all you really need is just what the guys said.
You got a bow and arrows you're good to go.

Tat, I talked with Jim from JimBow's last night and his indoor 3D shoots will be every Sunday night through the winter, hopefully starting the first Sunday in November. He is just waiting for his new targets to arrive and then he will post his schedule.

The only difference between a competitive shooter and one that shoots for fun is that we fun shooters don't need an excuse for when we miss. I have been going to the competitive shoots for years. I never win. I go to the Canadian Championships and have a great time. I meet a lot of great people and have a lot of laughs with other bowhunters. They are all nice people.

If you can hit a nine inch pie plate at 30 yards then you can shoot at most 3ds and be one of the guys. The tens are generaly four inches so if you can hit that all the time you might score well.

If you have a hunting bow then enter "hunter class".

If there are one hundred shooters and you win everyone will remember your name for a week or so. No one remembers the name of the person who gets second or the name of the person who is 99th. You remember the name of the guy who had the best hunting stories or the guy who told the best jokes. For most of us the shoot is about shooting our bows.

I think of the target as a hunting situation and as practice and I really believe that it has helped my hunting a lot.

After about five shoots you will realize that the same people are here that were at the last one and you start saying "Hi" to a lot of people.

I have rambled long enough. Go out and enjoy. If you are 10th or 50th on the score board it doesn't matter to many people except you. If you make a new friend then you are really a "winner". At making new friends at the shoots I have been a winner.

I will shooting as much as i can this year hopefully starting the first week in Nov at Jimbows ...... who knows with new Baby due inside the next 2 weeks then its evicted from Mamas belly ..... But like CDN said .....Calgary archery center ..... Jimbows have weekely shoots .... Cochrane sportmans soc. has one every month .. that one is great ... its on a dirt floor so if you miss ....its not that hard on yer equip... it also has a "Cub" div fer the little ones if you have kids that wanna shoot too.

Maybe this year I will get to the Bowbenders shoot in Lethbridge ..... last year I had car problems on the way down .....

the key is to have fun ....the only goal I pose on myself at shoots like Jimbows is to beat last weeks score as well as to make the second round score higher than the first round .... as far as bigger shoots ...like cochrane and Lethbridge ..... my only goal is to have fun and to hit foam every time ....I pretend its a real life situation and try for what i believe to be the "Kill Zone" regaurdless of where the scoring rings are (the bonus of that is ....... the rings fer the most are where the kill zone would be .... Its nice shooting a 10x sometimes  )

have fun
