1. Volunteering for the FCA

What’s it feel like? Why would anyone want to do all that work? What does a person get out of it? These are questions I ask myself when I think about being a volunteer. I’ve been working for FCA for years now, and I still do not know the answers for everyone, only for myself.

What’s it feel like? Many people are afraid it will be all work, and hard work at that. It can be, but usually it does not feel that way; most of the time it’s fun. We try to match people’s strengths to the jobs we have to fill. So, if you’re good at organizing, that’s what you should do. If you are an ideas person, then you do that. If you just like doing the labour to put on functions, then that’s where FCA will ask you to do. Placing a person in a task that the person likes to do makes the work fun for that person. We would not expect an ideas person to head a committee, or record the minutes for a committee unless that’s what they really want to do. That would be like asking Wayne Gretsky to hang up his skates and be a plumber.

Why would anyone want to do all that work? First, volunteering gives you a chance to learn and sharpen your skills supported by FCA’s great volunteer network and our peerless Executive Director. Second, volunteering puts you at the heart of a very dynamic organization where you can help choose the direction for Canadian Archery. And third, volunteering keeps you in touch with and contributing to this sport that has given us all so much.

So, if you want a chance to do more of what you love, and contribute to Archery in Canada at the same time, come join the ranks of your fellow Canadians who are volunteers already. We have immediate openings for positions of Directors at Large (from which FCA fills the Vice-presidential posts on the Executive Committee), on the Coach Certification Committee and the Youth/Canada Games Committee (reporting to VP – Committees and Projects), and on the Marketing Committee (reporting to VP – Marketing).

Roger Murray

FCA President

6. 2007 Pan American Staff Applications by September 5, 2006.

Please note that the High Performance Committee of the FCA is accepting applications for the following positions for the 2007 Pan American Games:

1/ Head Coach – the Canadian Olympic Committee’s (COC) policy regarding coaching certification requires that all support staff who will assume coaching responsibilities and who will be accredited by the COC during the 2007 Pan American Games be fully certified at NCCP Level IV. However, under certain circumstances the FCA can apply for an exemption to this rule. Therefore, FCA will be accepting applications from coaches who have full NCCP level 3 certification, and who have completed at least 50% of their level 4/5 tasks. Approval of any coach nominated for this position by the FCA is subject to the COC’s discretion.

2/ Team Leader- Minimum NCCP level 2 coaching certification preferred.

The Pan American Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 13th through July 29th, 2007.

At this time FCA is unsure if there will be enough archers attending this event to warrant both of these positions, but interested applicants should forward their resumes to the FCA office for consideration before September 5th, 2006.

Once FCA has more details regarding the team size and number of support personnel allowed by the COC, we may require one or both of these positions. Since the support positions are funded by the COC, should they only allow one support person on this team, then FCA will not fund another support position.
