View Full Version : Coyote Hunting
Ive had great success this winter calling in coyotes, it seems to me they are coming in to the calls alot better during this very mild winter. I have called in over 50 coyotes since the begining of December, and I have shot 32 of them. I am wondering if anyone else has found they are coming into calls better than normal this year?

Hey Milo!
Yote Hunting!, aint it great. :D . I have been out a few times, as work just keeps getting in the way!, but yes I have had some success this year with the calls, but I do also seem to get more yote action when the weather hits a nice cold snap. It sure has been a mild winter to say the least!, what you using for those yotes 22-250??, sounds lilke you have done really well this season.
Actually most people are very surprised to hear I use a winchester model 70 XTR Sporter chambered in a 7mm Remington magnum. I use 120 Gr. TSX BT's and they just punch through with a tiny entrance and exit hole. I have reached out and tapped two yotes at over 800 yards and they work great.

800 yards?! You're either crazy or full of doo-huckey!
I have those 120's shootin so hot, at that distance i'm only holdin about 6 inches over.

Sorry Milo, but I know ballistics and what you are saying above is impossible. There is no way that you can load a 7mm rem magnum with 120's and aim only six inches above your point of impact at 800 yards. This is impossible, I dont care how hot you load em. Bullet drop for a hot loaded 130 in a 7mm rem mag is around 30 something inches at 500 yards(off the top of my head) and drops off significantly after that.
Sorry man, but ya cant fool me :)
ok 6 inches above his back thats about 14 inch drop to the middle of the yote, and there shooting about 4 maybe 5 inches at the most high at 100 yards. these are triple shock X boat tails and there faster than my 120 gr. hornady spire points.

If you BELIEVE it's 800 yards then it's 800 yards. But if you get out the gps or rangefinder you might be in for a surprise, because the ballistics don't add up. I'd guess --I admit it's without looking at the charts but I'd just guess...bullet drop 800 yards...um 5or 6 feet. Not 6 inches, and not the combined 24 inches you came up with on yer second guess.

Even 24" of drop at 800 yards is physicaly impossible. The chef is right, you would be looking at 5 or 6 feet not inches.
Pull up any of the ballistics charts off of the net and have a look. Sorry, but it cant be done.
I shoot long range steel all the time and have shot lots and lots of calibres. I reload for about 15 different calibres and know that what you are saying is absolutely impossible.
Anyone wanna make me a bet for some cash :D
BTW, I hunt yotes quite a bit and really like watching them fall to a well placed long shot. But what I consider a long shot differs quite a bit from what you are claiming as a long shot.

I'm out on that bet Davey, Sorry I don't fell like handing out free cash, when it comes to coyote hunting, like you mentioned I hunt coyotes a lot you shouldn't have to take 800 yard shoots and if you do you should buy a new call. Primos Hot Dog and Lil dog are unbelievable for getting yoties into 100 yards.
Cheers,
Sorry to all of yu, what I perceived as the next quarterline was actually just a cross fence, my gps says the distance is decimal 26 of a mile, and if my math is correct thats about 450 yards. I felt completely full of **** after you all disagreed with what I said, so I took out my GPS, and I don't blame anyone if they still think I'm full of it.
And I'm out on the cash bet, all I care about is if I can knock em down and thats what I keep duin.
Any of you goin to Regina in March?

Your math is correct Milo, .26 of a mile is about 457 yards, that is a far cry from 800 though. Distance is a very hard thing to judge sometimes. But now your above numbers are starting to make a little more sense.
But if your getting the yotes that is all that counts :D
Happy hunting!

I absolutely suck at estimating distance, especially over 200 yards or so. Don't feel bad a lot of people over estimate yardage. Even pacing it out doesn't work because most people don't have a yard long stride. They take longer strides trying to make it an even yard but it eventually shortens up and strows the estimate off. Forestry guys know how many of their own paces in a chain and how many chains in a 100 yards. We were bow hunting a couple years ago and I estimated a sleeping buck at 400 yards--buddy pulls out the rangefinder and it's 140 yards or something like that.
Go get those 'yotes

Milo we all make those mistakes!, let them bullets fly!. My hunting partner has the Browning "A" Bolt Varmint Stalker 22-250 heavy Barrel, and that thing is awesome. I recently put money down on the same rifle!, I'm tell'n you I have been out with him on many Yote hunts and that gun just seems to never fail him.
Happy Yote Hunt'n, take care of them Yotes so I have lot's of Pheasants left to shoot come October.
I think there's only a couple more weeks before they start rubbin and will be now good, Ive bin seein em in pairs now and the odd pack is grouping together. I sure hope they stay good for a little longer. Anyone else seeing this in their area?

Have not been out for a couple weeks, hopefully they are pack'n up!, I might head out tomorrow, hopefully get a crack at a couple yotes!, and also hopefully find some sheds.
I shot 2 this weekend completely rubbed out not worth nothin, so I guess yote season around Rocky Mountain House is over till next year. Whats it like in other parts of the country?

I ended up gett'n out once last week!, saw 5 in total!, got a shot at one, and missed!, right over the back, but it was awesome just to see his reaction when my bullet nearly took him down. As for the other 4, they were running like a bat atta hell, all packed up in the same coule, but they did not present a good shot at all. My bud Rubberduck has been having some awesome luck with Primo's Hot Dog yote call!, that will be my next purchase.

Just trying to knock them off and will continue right through the summer so that I can do my duty in saving some of the pheasant population.

I went out last Sat. saw 4 and got 4 shots off all were running like hell so no hits but it was still a lot of fun. The more yotes down the less fawns and pheasant chicks will be gobbled up.
the chef
I wouldn't shoot em in the summer, ya need seed for next year. I usually don't shoot at em when there runnin, it programs em to run whenever they see another human after that.

I think a coyote that's been called and associates it with human, whether it only sees or smells you or gets shot at is never going to come to a call and let itself be seen again. They get educated real fast, no matter how they learn it you're lucky to see the same ones twice. If coyotes were less plentiful I would agree totally with you, but we're overrun with the little buggers. I rarely hunt them but I think with good numbers they should be shot a lot.

Milo!, was out today with RUBBERDUCK's brother for some Yotes!, lot's a snow and lot's of yotes, Only thing is as soon as they see the truck they run faster than a Antelope. took a crack at 2 of them but did not connect!, fast buggers!.. well heading back out tomorrow!, we will see what happens??, Anyone else been out for yotes??
Yote season for the year is finished for me now I think now. The snow is leaving. But the 22-250 is coming out for long range Gophers. good luck to anyone bear hunting this spring, and to everyone hunting this fall.

Hey I got a stupid question. What is the purpose of hunting coyotes? Is it just to reduce predation of fawns and game animals? What do you guys do with them once you do kill one? Do you sell the fur?

The purpose of shooting yotes can be many.
#1 population control, If we do not keep the population of the coyotes at bay, they can be very prone to disease (Mange) mostly.
#2 The coyotes are one of the most adaptable animals around. They will become unafraid and start to come into farm yards after pets, cattle, sheep etc. These are easy prey when they are in corrals or in the yards penned up.
#3 The coyotes will hunt and kill many shore birds and cause a reduction on the grow of the birds. they are famous for robbing nests of the eggs before they are hatched. They are also very likely to hunt and kill many of the young fawns, leaving a high mortality rate.
#4 Most people hunt the yotes to try to help stop some of these from happening and also for the sport of hunting them. IMHO if you can on a regular basis outsmart a yote, it will make you a better stalker on other game animals.
#5 I do beleive most people will try to sell the hides to make a little extra mad money.
Hope this helps some this list is not in any particular order just wrote them down as they came to me. I am sure some of the other guys will have more things to add
Travis
I agree with all those reasons. I think hunting yotes makes you a better big game hunter, they are small targets and you are shooting at an animal which gives you a mental edge, shooting targets all the time helps but shooting a live target that can outsmart you does help with the mental part of shooting as well.
