Weapon: Name your weapon of choice
Distance: 108 yards (you measured with your rangefinder)
Conditions: early fall season, mid-morning, dry and cool
Situation: You're downwind, in a thick treeline silently watching with your binoculars

Will you take the shot?
What are your concerns that make/break your decision to shoot?
Tell us what you think!

OK,

Shooting my .308 Remington 742, BOOM!!!

If the presence of the cub is supposed to affect my decision, it does not. We're overrun with bears here in Ontario and if nature can't take care of the cub.....not my problem.

No shot, simply because of the cub. Nuff said!

Cubs definately over 1 year of age, but have shot my share of bears and would not want to tag this one. Even if it was a lone bear the long legs, smallish body and large ears would mean I would be passing on the shot.........

I would say considering this is a fall hunt, that the cub in the pic is not over one year in age. Tell me why you think differently?

Likely cause I can't read, was just assuming a spring hunt since I'm looking forward to heading out again. Given fall hunt your likely right, and I would still be passing on the shot.....

Cub could still be over 1 year of age but given its size you couldn't be sure here in Alberta I think most would pass the shot

NOTE
Fall Weight of Cubs: By their first fall, cubs may weigh as little as 15 pounds or more than 165 pounds, depending on food supply

being Fall ...Definatly this years Cub ..... Fer Once Crazy is right ;) :lolouch:

An Early Fall hunt I would have my bow anyway and 108 yrds is a bit far ..... Even though I have a tape for 110 yrds;)

So ya ... PASS and stay quiet ... and keep watching them ... Making sure they dont skirt me on differant sides ... If it looks they will put me in the middle .... I will give up my position and make all sorts of noise to scoot them outta there

If I am in bear country with just my bow I will carry Bangers with me as well

But If I was still living in BC (Prince George Area)... I can throw a rock one direction in the woods and hit about 3 of the suckers ..... ... But if I were still in BC it would 1996 instead of 2006 and I would still have my Trusty model 99 .300 Savage and that would be one dead Bear and I would have a freezer full o' sausage ....hmmmmm Bear Sausage .....

Thanks for the explanation . You are right, very hard to tell at that stage in the cubs life. But I would say almost for sure that it would be this years cub.

Allthough the mamma is not huge, if that little one wasnt in the picture after double and triple checking, I would probably take the shot. Pictures are very decieving and sometimes make these sort of questions very hard without actually being there.

108 Yards! Too far for me, even if I wanted to take a shot, would have to get closer with the bow and would likely step on at least two branches closing the distance.

Man, next time I do have to read the whole thing! :D
