You can build a slave flash depending on what type of trail camera you have. The pix slave flash board has a learning mode on it to learn the flash sequence of many cameras.

I have done some IR experimentation. What you get will depend a great deal on the type of camera you are using. Is it IR film or a digital camera? Most digital cameras have a "hot mirror" filter in the sensor array which blocks out IR light. I have a modified camera with this removed. It means taking the whole camera apart though. Sony digital cameras often have an Infrared mode, but they limit the settings you can use. This is to prevent "x-ray" vision - where pervs can take pictures through women's white clothing. The best would be either modified digital or film. IR Film must be loaded very carefully though. In total darkness. As for an IR light, I'm not as familiar. You could use a strong flash, and put an opaque IR filter over it, taping it in place. A gel filter for example may work. Hope this helps.
