Seeing as springtime is slow in the oil patch and i'm wanting to arrow a bear, I figure I'm going to go for a week in 2006. Could always use some company. I have a trailer to stay in, but wanting to stay in Alberta (good old STARS) so if anyone may be interested, let me know of dates and areas so I can book time off if I need. Bowhunters preferred so I get a shot or two also. BTW I'm in Calgary.

What part of the patch you work in Hubbard? Also, do you have any favorite bear huntin' spots? Thi will be my first time, so i really dont know where the hot spots are, and i dont have a lot of free time to find any.

Bitbywolf, if I'm not guiding on the island I'll be out hunting bears lots. So far I hopefully will be hunting with another guy off thi site. But if your interested in coming up here for bears we might be able to arrange something. Of course, you are already in some GREAT bear country. Just a thought.

Cool my hunting partner used to work up in Ferrow we some day might get back there as he has freinds that can take us Stone sheep hunting he has tree monsters on his wall along with the 7th largest Caribu in the P.Y.

His Bud was down two years ago and we all went Elk hunting but I cut it short after shooting a whitetail the first 5 min into the morning hunt we didn't quite get out of town got out for the rest of the day though but only saw Elk from miles away threw the spotting scope, he was down only for one day.

Missed this one with the bow two years ago but went back with my 300 weatherby.

One can just buy a big horn sheet tag here but there still hard to get.

I did get a mountain goat once and he's on my wall now.

Sounds good. I can fit 5 guys + gear comfortably in my trailer. Looks like BC is the place to go for a nice Elk.

Well the trailer is good but I hunt out of my house but there is a camping spot 3 blocks away and tons of bush.

This Elk I got with my 69 year old Dad in only one day last year the old goat shot it from 396 yards with his 40 year old 30-06 but there is never any guaranty we'll get somthing.

We got lucky the first spot I drove to had someone in it the secound spot had two people in it and the third had an Elk bugling in it.

Nice Bull! Experience wins over technology again. The only thing 3 blocks from my house is an annoying neighbor kid, mabye the odd gopher under the house. So the trailer comes in handy. (Has satellite TV too)

I work for nabors drilling, just your basic roughneck for now. I know a few good spots for bears what are ya looking for bait, spot and stalk?

Joey
01-16-2006, 09:35 PM
Every rig needs a roughneck. Never hunted bear before, and dont know exactly where i will be going, so I dont know which method will be best. Wheres your rig drilling at?

were drilling just west of beaverlodge right now and it looks like we will be there till break up. Baiting is alot of work but it usually pays off and spot and stalk is really fun and in lots of places you can do it in the same area pretty affectively.

Im not much for sitting and waiting for critters to come to me. Except for bugling Elk in.
GP area was the one place i thought i might have some luck with bears. I was sitting on Jade #14 west of beaverlodge about 2 months ago. Saw a nice Moose while i was there too.

I shot my moose just north of GP this fall in the saddle hills but i didn't seemuch bear sign like i was hoping to, fox creek and swan hills area has a ton of bears.

Lots of good bears in the Saddle Hills, I've hunted them basically my whole life. Some great areas to set baits once you get far enough back into them. They are also fairly accessable by quad, and in the spring you'd probably never see another hunter. South of GP is another great area, anywhere between GP and Grande Cache I'm sure will produce huge bears... :D

Just got a huge tip-off for an area known for its big, colored bears. Looks like i got my location for the spring fling all set. Consulting has its perks i guess.

yea I guess ... I'm thinkin about baiting this year with my bow .... what would be a good back up weapon .... 410 with slugs?

Thats the only shot gun I got access to and my rifle is not tight quarterd treestand friendly

Interesting! My brother in-law used to work with DFO in Kamloops, Lillooet and Prince Rupert. Met a couple of the guys in Kamloops and Lillooet a few years back - Stu, Tim & Terry. Had an opportunity to ride one of their jet boats on the Frasier from Lillooet to Boston Bar before the mechanical fiasco began LOL.

Funniest thing I experienced with the guys - I was in the jeep with their Supervisor getting a ride back (since the boat broke down) and the RCMP was working with the Customs officers over the radio - they had pulled over a RV pulling a small outboard motorboat with a mid-80's S15 GMC Jimmy sitting in the boat! It was too much - I wish I had my camera that day!

BTW Joey - I've heard, but don't know personally, that the Athabasca region (WMU 510) is prime habitat for healthy black bear in strong numbers.

Hey Joey, you gonna divulge your bear spot or what? I still got my trailer to add to the mix if need be. I'm in, of course.

Hey Paul where you been hiding at? Ive been talking to some people here in Whitecourt, and they have been quite informative. The Swan Hills seem to be OK with a lot of people, but very hard terrain to hunt. I've heard the place to go is south of Edson, towards Robb. Big bears, colored bears, and lots of them. Also got permission to go on land with 180 class Whiteys, and big Elk. He allows bowhunters only, and the few people he has let on have nearly 100% success. Something to think about. Your more than welcome to join a bear hunt. Havent got any confirmed yet, but lots of time.

I was in Swan hills an in House River area north of Lac le biche back in 2001 for forest fires, never seen as many bears as I did then, we averaged 7-8 encounters a day. At one point we needed heavy choppers to drop water on a couple of bears to keep them off crews, also had a bear that walked right up to a 214 medium that was sitting on the ground with rotors turning.

Sounds like an entertaining way to keep 'em away Kirby. I've been busy with the new little one, 1 month old and packing on the lbs! Good grub in them feed bags of Mom I guess, LOL. I spent about a week in Robb area bowhunting last Sept, saw one sow with cubs and a quite a few tracks. Lots of good looking old cutovers and cutlines up there for sure. I know some good spots up that way.

Well I have hunted for years with my hunting partner Rubberduck!, and every year he brings me down near good old Kananaskis Country! to Hunt awesome Elk & Black Bear!. Grizzley's are also active, but thankfully we have not come into any direct contact!, Ducky let's leave it that way. But if you are looking for a great Spring Black Bear hunt!, all I can say is Kananskis country! is the place to be.

I'm looking at doing a spring hunt this year ...... anyone ever use "Bacon Candles" as a lure??

Basically building candles outta bacon grease ....

I would suspect they would work pretty good ...any thoughts

Hey gang,

I am looking to do a spring bear hunt close to calgary ( 2 to 4 hours away from town).......Likely up around the headwaters of Burnt Timber Creek.......However, I am open to other locations if others more experienced than I have better spots etc.

I would love to go further afield, but pocket book constraints and a busy work schedule have limited my plans significantly.

That being said I would like to hunt with a bow or a rifle and I want to try spot and stock. I have often seen bears in cutblocks and on avalanche slopes in the early spring. I saw several black bears last year up above the powderface trail in K country. However, I am not sure if you can hunt in that area with a rifle or a bow or even hunt at all. The regs are a little foggy.

Anyway if anyone is interested in joining me, I would appreciate the company. I am still new to hunting and the opportunity to spend a few days with someone with more experience would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

BRC

Hey grandslam. I've been wanting to hit K-country myself but have been sort of afraid of all the parks and whatnot, as well as access to legal areas. I guess i've not put in the effort to find all the boundaries so I'm legal. Whereabouts do you guys hunt for elk and bear (just a point in the right direction)? Thanks, if you don't mind. I still gotta convince my wife to go after Yogi with my bow. Maybe a dual flyfish/bowhunt trip could work. She doesn't mind the fishing or big game hunting, but bears she don't agree with. K-country might be the ticket. Later.

Grande cache has some nice bears,I used to live up there for a few years and did alot of hunting.I wish that things would slow down for me in the patch so I could get out and go bear hunting but operating doesn't seem to have a slow time.
