Do you skin off the velvet for a wall hanger or do you leave it on?.......the elk I got 2 weeks ago was still in velvet and the tips of the antlers were very soft. I've seen photos from caribou lodges where all of the velvet was skinned off.

I think it all boils down to preference but I've seen many deer trophy mounts that had the velvet on them, so why not an elk too?

I would leave it on .....
I typically have not much use for a rack to hang on my wall ....however that being said I would love to get me a full velvet one and that is my goal eventually

The choice is yours ,I would love to get a whitetail/elk of any size in velvet lets face it chances are slim as for most areas you only have a couple weeks if that to score before the animals start to shed there velvet. You say you got your animal two weeks ago,I hope you have the rack in a freezer if you want the velvet as buy now it has probably started to rot or if you are going to strip it peel it now its alot easyer to clean before it starts to dry.But whatever you choose congratulations on your trophy. Thanks for the tips boys, I think the velvet is pretty muck dry but I'll leave in my wood shed a bit longer to make sure.......weathers been warm and windy for the past week or so, so it's drying nicely....I hope.
