Weapon: Compound Bow
Distance: 40 yards
Conditions: sunny, mild breeze blowing from your right
Situation: You're in a ground blind watching the bull approach, behind the elk is a rugged escape route leading to a lake.

Will you take the shot?
What are your concerns that make/break your decision to shoot?
Tell us what you think!

Awsome bull but if he is coming in I would wait for a better angle for a shot and maybe with a little luck he might get closer.

I'm thinking that the wind is blowing towards him and you may get busted.

However, for me, 40 yards is out of my range and I'd probably wait until he's at the 30 yard mark for sure. However, 25 would be even better. The angle at this point is a low percentage shot too isn't it?

Seeing how he's coming my way, I wait him out a few more paces.

Mike

P.S. Then go home and change my shorts!

Yup...I agree with Cody. I would wait a bit to see if he presented a better shot. He's quartering towards us pretty hard.

I agree,

This is a low percentage shot, only a hand full of archers I know could thred that shot properly.

Elk have huge shoulder blades and that one is right in the way of your arrow.

Go with the group, he's forty out, that means you've got some time to wait and let him turn.

I would have to agree with all of you, that is a terrible angle to shoot at. Since he is no his way in, I would wait for a better shot. I would rather not take a shot than wound an animal.

I would wait i hope! it would sure test your willpower wouldn`t it yes i would wait but you would sure be talking to yourself if he busted you in another ten yards.

yes it would suck if he busted you but I would be even more sick if I watched him run away with a non-lethal arrow dangling from that front shoulder.

A seven point (whats that an admiral ) at forty yards might really test you . I really wonder how many would take that shot. Would you take it at 30 yds in the position ?

No I wouldn't take the shot . It would be too hard to hit the vitals. I would wait as he would turn and present a better shot with more vitals. The last thing I would want to be doing is chasing a wounded animal through the bush. Your first shot should always be a kill shot and not a hail mary maybe I will get lucky.

I would definately not be shooting.....the Jasper park officials don't tend to like it when you shoot there elk in front of a bunch of tourist's!! :punch: OH.....and there's no shot anyway....wiat for him to turn.

Ok, let's ask another question. What if it was 15 yards? I only ask because I've never shot an elk. If you had heavy arrows and a stout bow would you have a chance?

No matter the distance, I'd like to think I'd do the proper thing and wait for a more broadside shot.

Now, I have yet to hunt a day with my bow yet, so the seasoned veterens may correct me.

I would be too busy crappin my pants to draw back. Honestly though I would wait. even If he didn't move any closer but moved to the right and gave me the same shot quartering away, I would then take it.

well unfortunately i would be waiting for a better shot, there is no way i am going to shot my bow on that big of a animal if i cant get a good strong shot first if it was less of a angle and had another 10 steps forward giving me a better side view then i would take a shot but i would have to wait and if i dont get a shot then thats the way it is, i would have to try a new stragedy..

Nothing like hitting a Big Bull Elk like that one and wounding it and never finding it its be a shame and not im me to make mistakes like that

I have been lucky enough to shoot several elk with my bow and trust me you dont want to be messin around with an elks shoulder I hit one elk with a 460grain arrow at 15 yards and got the shoulder blade and it stopped it but i was lucky enough to get another arrow in the right spot .

I have to say that I would take the shot at the base of the neck just were the color goes from dark to light, 40 yards is not that far,I have been shooting up to 60 yds with a 3 inch grouping, I know my skills and have taken enough neck shots to sure of placement, this is just my opinion. Hasn't anyone ever taken this kind of shot in a 3D shoot?

Right on someone who goes against the masses :teehee: I agree that shots there and i have the ability to make that shot in practice or on the 3d course every time. But i still wound not take the shot at 40 yards. At 30 yds if thats all i had! thats a bull of a lifetime.

can you stay calm enough to take that shot :?: :?:

how far will that bull go on 1 lung :?: :?: :?:

have you ranged it do you know its 40 yards :?: :?:

good luck packing the elk up the hill from that lake

I can't see getting in the boiler room from that angle. That shot there is only good for your camera.

I agree with the rest ouf you and wait for a better shot as well, why risk wounding the animal.
