This 35mm unit uses a automobile door lock solenoid that is activated by the motion sensor. It depresses the camera shutter, so the camera does not need to be wired internally. I only built 2 of these a few years back, they're a bit noisy, but they still do work OK. I'm sure it was the sound of the solenoid that shook him up.
It's hard to jump the flash itself.
