Your lucky man, glad to see your ok. Last year I had a simular experience archery bear hunting. One of the guys I hunt shot a 250lb male bear, Calls me on the radio and tells me he'll pick me up with the quad so we can go get the bear. He shows up and tells me the bear is dead and that we should leave our bows at my stand. So we do. Start walking in on the trail following the game tracker line and came to a large area of ferns about middle of the chest high. Start walking through and all of a sudden the bear stands up 8 feet from us. No bows nothing but the knife on my belt." Lucky" we backed away and the bear didn't charge. My guy takes the quad goes get the his bow and comes back. We walk in to about 10yds and he reshoots the bear. I've never been that close to a live bear before or a wounded one. It sure gets your heart pounding. Hopefully your bear won't mess up your deer hunting.
"Good luck" hunting this year I hope it will be very successful..

Well,
Never posted any stories from my vacation yet, so here's the highlight of one of my days.
My buddy and I went on 24 km kayak paddle, through 6 portages. At 4:00 pm, I arrived at the 20 km mark and the final portage...a very short 20 meter or so portage over a man-made dam. There's a small trail along a huge rock face down to the dock to the next lake.
I got there about 5 minutes before my buddy (he had slowed down to observe a buck I hadn't seen). I tread down to the dock, drop my paddle, skirt and lifejacket (whistle attached to it) and decide to walk back up and sit in the shade and wait for him.
I walk back up the trail with a strong wind in my face.
The other side of the shore is only 10 or 15 yards away.
I sit down on a rock about 40 meters from the dock and suddenly heard something that caused me to turn around. I looked over the other side and saw a bear with two cubs.
Cool, I think.....my first real bear sighting. Then, a third cub really close to me takes off to catch momma.
I still think they'll head away from me but then see the mother cross the lower part of the dam and come up on my side, near the dock.
Remember the really big rock? Well, I couldn't remember if the rock was all the way or not so for the next 30 seconds, I figured they'll have no choice but to come right up the trail!
Literally up the creek without a paddle!
I get ready to yell and scream if I see them, but never do. Fortunately there was a path on the other side of the dock!
Certainly not a position you want to find yourself in.
Glad to hear it all worked out for you too!

Nothing like a close encounter to get the ticker pumpin.
394,I had a very similar incident happen about 20 some odd years ago.I was fishing on Heffley Crk,north of Kamloops.Iwas cutting across some property I had permission to be on.I was walking down a skid trail that had a fence across it,I climbed over the fence and was just getting ready to take a step when a sow black bear stood up in the grass about 25 yards in front of me.I knew she was a sow because I could see the heads of her two cubs just below the tops of the grass heads. To this day I don't remember how I went over a 4 strand barb wire fence backwards with a flyrod in my hands. The sow woofed and the cubs departed towards the tree line, she stood her ground and I watched her until I got around a bend in the trail.Ran into Bill, the owner of the land and told him about the bear and he told me how she put him up a fir tree when he was out looking for a horse earlier in the week.

It is nice to hear that other people have had 'experiences with bears also'. When I was working up in norther BC I decided to go deer hunting across from my little town. I had been scouting there for the last few weeks and knew there was a very good sized Whitetail waiting for me.
After getting off work early in the morning I drove to my site and decided to take a nap close to the trail. This way if I heard something I could wake up and shoot it. I slept for about an hour and heard this noise. Something was coming down the trail. After waiting for about 15 minutes I could still hear something but it was not getting any closer.
I got up and started walking very slowly in the direction of the sound. Soon I could see that it was a black bear tearing a log apart looking for some grubs. Well he certainly wasn't the deer I was looking for but I had a bear tag. I brought my shotgun up to my shoulder and started to aim. (I only had two sabot rounds). He was about 60 meters away and I carefully aimed and squeezed the trigger. BOOM! The bear dropped!
Bears being bears, he was not too happy to be shot. He got up on his hind legs and looked right at me then charged. You know that feeling you get when you know your life is over....I was feeling it right then!
I quickly reloaded and waited as he had dissapeared behind some bush. He stood up again looking for me and I shot. I don't think I hit him as I was shaking so hard. He got down on all fours again and ran strait for me.
Well this was it. I am dead, mauled by a very very ****ed off bear! I looked about and saw that the trees were not big enough to climb so I did the next best thing. I took one step off the trail and pretended to be a tree. The bear running full tilt ran right beside me brushing my pants and kept going. His blood was all over the front of my pants it was that close.
It took me about 15-20 minutes to get my legs moving I was so scared. I very slowly and very very quietly walked back to my truck and got a couple friends to help me find the bear.
We found it not 50 metres where he brushed against me.
The moral of the story is....never never go bear hunting by yourself and bring lots of ammo! (and a spare set of underwear!)

We had a black bear try to sneak up on us when we were turkey hunting this spring. I guess he heard our hen clucks and yelps and was hoping to make himself a turkey sandwich for lunch. We didn't know he was there until we stood up to move locations. It was within 30 yards and took off up a tree. It woofed and popped and growled at us while we backed off. The fact that I only had 3-#6's in my 12 ga didn't make me very comfortable!
