hmm, all around? well lets figure all around? I'm gonna say .264 mag Fast, flat. Now in ''popular'' cartriges, I'll go with .270 or 7mm mag.

I don`t think theres any such thing as the best cal. The rifle you are packing at the time is the best. But i like 30 cal and bigger ive shot whitetail with a 30-30 30-06 45-70 all worked great.

I would say the .264 as well....

I think it really depends where you are hunting and what type of bush or open areas you have. If I am hunting thick bush I preferr a 30-30 with open sights or a 12 gauge with a deer barrel and slugs. If I am hunting an area that is more open then I use my 30-06 with a scope. I do think that more deer have been shot with a 30-30 since they have been around forever.

I'm on the .264 Mag bandwagon as well... had one of them as my primary rifle for four years and it was an awesome shooting gun. Hand-loaded all the ammo but when I got a .300WSM I then got 120gr bullets and turned my .264 into the meanest little varmint gun you ever saw! Sold the gun to a new hunter in Edmonton last year and he has had nothing but great things to say about it as well.

I use a 25-06 Sako that I really like. I used a .22-250 for deer hunting for about 14 years and shot a pile of deer with it. Most guys will cringe at the thought but it was all I had and if you placed your shots in the boiler room it didn't matter how small the gun was. I only lost one deer that I shot with it and I trailed him for half a day and went back the next morning but still couldn't find him. I don't think it matters how big or small your rifle is,just like bowhunting it is more a matter of shot placement in the end. :) :) :)

Hey Captain 2k what's the scoop on your .25-06. I know 2 guys that may be interested in it. Let me know how much, model, etc. and I'll pass it on. I have a cousin in Lethbridge that will be coming out here in 3 weeks time so he could bring it out if I can get it sold for you.

I use a 6.5 x 55 swedish .......for distance beyond this caliber (600-800yrds) I would suggest a 6.5-08 (good up to 2000 yrds and beyond)
why do I use a 6.5 x55 ... small light fast..... shoots like a 270 .... has the knock down power of 300 mag
its not very popular I know .... but IMHO its the best medium sized game rifle out there
Also well known in the Eurpeon circles as the most popular Sniper rifle out the because of its trajectory ....relitivly flat
the 6.5-08 is a custom round using an 8mm cartridge necked down to the 6.5 cal. and pounds the shell out at close to 6000 fps
the 6.5x55 shoots about half that speed ....still pretty smokin'
3-49 ACC. If I'm desparate then I use a .270

The rifle of choice for me is a 308 win. I have been using this gun for over 25 years and it has not let me down once, 16 elk, 7 moose 18 deer, and with 55 grain accelerators to many ground hogs to count if I had to buy a new gun it would be a 270

If I were to own one single gun for everything it would be a .30-06 just because you have so many bullets and weights to choose from, especially if you load your own. Luckily we are actually allowed to own more than one so for deer only I would recommend the .270 hands down. It is a pleasure to shoot, light to carry, fast and flat shooting and does a very clean job on deer.

I use to use a .300 Win Mag, now I use a .300 WSM with 180gr bullets.

6000 fps???????? sounds like a fish story to me.

Mikey, where'd you get that data from? The fastest 6.5 I could find was the 264 win mag and it tops out @ 3700 fps with a 85gr HP. The 6.5/06 tops out @ 3300 fps with a 85 gr HP. I think the fastest caliber is the 22/250 Ackley Improved @ 4300 fps & 40 gr HP, the 22/250 Rem will shoot the same bullet @ 4200 fps. The 7mm STW will spit out a 120 Spitzer @ 3600 FPS! Also, the 6.5x55 isn't as fast as any of the 30/06 or .308 family BUT it's track record in the accuracy department definitely speaks for itself. Lot's of guys that use 6.5x55 for hunting swear by them and probably for good reason.

I'm with ya Chef. At 6000 fps the gun better be cheap because I think you will be spending a s**t load of money replacing burnt out barrels. That was the knock on the .264 and I know it did not go 6000 fps. For me it is a toss up for the .270 and 25-06. For all round I would have to go with the .300 win mag. Flat, fast and big enough to get you out of a jam.

The 6.5 is a great bullet and was actually used in elephant culling for awhile. You have no argument from me on that one. As far as I know nothing does 6000fps, I hang out at the Accurate Reloading site a LOT.

I only have one big game rifle. I feel that it is a great all round gun, because it will shoot deer, moose and elk quite well. It is a sako 7mm mag. If I wanted to buy another gun just for deer I would get a 243 swm or a 25-06 because they are quite flat shooting and they would have little recoil - that way my wife could shoot more comfortably.
first rifle was a 270.and it is awesome, especially in farm land.I live in ontario and we have lots of big timber as well.when I am in the bush I love my 45-70.it is great for moose deer or bear out to 150 yards.after that distance trajectory starts to suffer.

.270, 7mag, 25-06, 7mm-08, 6.5X55, 260, 30-06, 308 in that order.
Oh, the difference between the first on the list and last - not much.

Iceman, I'd say there's not much difference between the first and second on the list....the 308 is quite a bit slower than both the 270 and the 7mm. The 270 and 7 mm have pretty similar sectional densities also.

The 25-06 is a great deer rifle, I picked up a new 25 WSSM in the spring and I want to compare the two.

Tis' true, but for deer... dead is dead. All will penetrate far enough on poor angles, proper bullets are available for them all, under 300 yds bullet drop isn't an issue, over 300 you need to know what you're doing with any of them anyway...

I would say the best would be any big game caliber that you know you can shoot at varying distances and one that fits you like an extension of your body, oh yea and one that shoots a decent group 1 - 1.75MOA @ 100yds.
Personally i have been shooting a 270 winchester for the better part of 10 years since i was 15 years old and i havent needed a different caliber from coyotes to moose. :flame:

Rem 700 30-06 sprfg hands down!!!!!!!!!!!LOL.Just my preference and favorite all round calibre.Whatever your compfortable with is the best for you. Also how can you argue with the history behind the 30-30 winchester???
I can, I call it living in the past. The gun is over rated.

Come on now russ, thats like saying the Montreal Canadiens are over rated. The 30-30 is like the Habs. You can call it and them a DYNASATY.Its just right now they are on the backburner to other guns and teams.LOL
The only reason the 30-30 was so prevalent was that it was cheap and every where. Besides, why on earth would you buy a 45/70 if you knew the only bullets you could find were for a 30-30 at the nearest traders? The only claim to fame that caliber has is that it was cheap and everywhere.
As for the habs go; again that's living in the past.

I'm sorta with Mikey on this one but I used the americanized version of the 6.5X55. We call it a 260 Rem. Great flat shooting gun with incredible hitting and penetrating power. Great caliber.

The best whitetail caliber is the one you shoot most accurately. Having said that, for most guys, that rules out magnums. Take a coin and flip among a 270, 30-06, 7mm-08, or a 308, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better...

So is the .270 Winchester -made popular by Jack O'Connor
Still use one however it is an Ackley Improved version.
I have used various calibres and they all have their application.
22-250 probably a little small for deer, but usable dependingon application
338 probably a little big but usable
everything in between comes down to application and personal preference.
Kinda like broadheads!

22-250 probably a little small for deer
Thats probably why it is illegal to hunt deer with anything smaller than a .23 calibre in Alberta.
I too own many rifles, about 30 to be exact. I would also pick a .270 for deer, or maybe a .280 depending on how I feel that day.
