Recent human encounters with grizzly bears in the popular Ghost-Waiparous recreational area has lead to a partial closure of the area by Fish and Wildlife officers.

On Saturday, May 28, 2005, a group of hikers was charged by a grizzly bear that was accompanied by a cub. The grizzly bit one man’s arm, but the man was able to escape without further injury.

Another bear encounter occurred in a nearby area the same day. Three people were dirt biking near Waiparous when they saw a grizzly bear with three cubs just a few metres from the trail. The grizzly made a bluff charge, but the bikers were able to get away safely.

The closed area includes the area east of the Waiparous gravel pit and the area northeast of the Waiparous campground. Fish and Wildlife officers will determine when the area can be re-opened.

Keep in mind that bear warnings and area closure signs are posted for good reason. Do not enter areas that are closed due to the presence of bears.

Bear-human encounters emphasize the importance of learning about bear safety before traveling to the backcountry and the need to be “bear smart” when enjoying the outdoors.
