COLUMBIA COUNTY - On a television monitor, the videotape shows an eerie middle-of-the-night scene just off a public road in Columbia County. It's an amazing scene in the dark: there is so much bumper-to-bumper traffic you'd think it was middle of the day rush hour.

OSP officer Robin Hall watches intently for signs of evidence; a license plate or other recognizable feature from the line of off-road vehicles. She told KATU, "they seem to go all hours day and night. These guys all obviously know each other and came up to this area for this reason."

The reason the vehicles have traveled to this area is called the "mud run." It's a popular, mile-long but illegal trail that some off-roaders cut into the dirt last winter. During the day, officer Hall and her partner Luke Schwartz call it a "muddy mess."

"The riders love mud holes because they create a big splash effect when they go through and get the trucks all muddy. It's what they want: big, deep holes that get a lot of water in them. This illegal trail has plenty of them.

But the environmental damage along the 'mud run' has been significant and lasting: this little spot right here has been dug down by numerous people that have tried to make it up and over - this damage is going to be very expensive to repair.

So far, the repair price tag is more than $24,000. That is why state police officers have turned to a hidden camera that's focused down the illegal trail and catches the trespassing riders in the act.

In one scene, a man tries to tear down one of the five "No Trespassing" signs that have been posted on the road. In another scene, two men riding atop an ATV get into deep trouble when their ATV gets stuck in a mud hole and they fall in.

Officers need help identifying and locating the people who are breaking the law - and not just the off-road riders, but people who leave their trash and who come to the area to shoot guns.

One young man is caught on tape attempting to shoot a shotgun - but the safety's on and the gun won't fire. The man seems to look down the barrel of the loaded gun, and then realizes his mistake and fires away at the posted signs.

Officer Schwartz told KATU that he's disgusted by some of the behavior caught on tape: "Some of it's pretty humorous and some of it's scary - especially the way some people handle firearms."

Schwartz added that it's hard to catch the illegal riders and shooters because he cannot be on the location every day and every night. He'd like to catch the guilty people because they should pay for the damage they do.

"Definitely like to catch those people and hold them accountable for this kind of damage, so we don't have to pay that bill. Let's make the people who come out here and cause this problem pay that bill."

The Oregon State Police would like your help catching up with the illegal riders and shooters to help put an end to a mud run that's no fun for the public.

If you have any information you can call Oregon State Police at 1-800-452-7888 or 503-397-0325. Your call can be anonymous - and you do not need to provide your name or phone number or address to the officers.

hmmm....what was that "broad brush" you were talkin' about in that other thread? :D LOL!

Not all quadders are like that....but after reading that post....makes you wonder why the govt. started the gun registry...Gun owners must all be irresponsible too....

As the saying goes...it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch.....
