Its' all necessary  That's what I tell the wife anyways. I still have my surplus wool pants I picked up for $10, but I now wear a set of thinsulate overalls instead, much more comfortable. It all still comes down to time in the woods, your personal skill and a little luck. The new stuff just makes it more comfortable or makes us think we have a better chance of bagging that record buck.

Of course it's necessary! That's because we're spoiled now though, getting a little soft maybe. When we go to moose camp, we tell everybody about how we were "roughing it" for a week and a half camped out in the bush with only our tents and "stuff". It's our "stuff" that makes it pretty easy though, we had 3 big canvas tents, 1 for kitchen tent and 2 guys in each of the others; wood stoves in each, coleman camp stoves, barbeques, tables, chairs, portable biffy, you name it. It took 3 quad trailers to haul everything in and get it set up. People say, how can you stay out in the woods that long? Man, if they knew how comfy we were they would be jealous. Even our wives and some of the kids spent a couple nights in moose camp and enjoyed it.
No, they're not gimmicks anymore......they're necessities now. Maybe not necessities but think how much easier and more comfortable it is out there now compared to when we wore our old wool outfits and carried everything in on our backs. Some guys still do that, and they enjoy it a lot. I've just reached the age where I enjoy the comfortable way.
Don't question it, just enjoy it.
