View Full Version : Looking for a longbow

I've gotten knee deep into archery within the last year or so.. started off with a beautiful Olympic Recurve, 40lb but with my traditional/medieval nature, it's just not cutting it anymore.
Too many fancy bells and whistles.

Having said that, I'm looking for a plain and simple Longbow. Preferably used since my student budget won't allow for much more then 150$ CAD or so.... Anyone have any leads? I've looked all over the place - Ebay, here, retailers (who stock longbows, but the fancy kind worth upwards of 800  )

Please, oh PLEASE someone let me indulge myself...
Thx in advance

-Greg, Kiltclad.

U should be able to find a factory bow in your price range at your local pro shop. Or at least they can order one in for u. I've tried a few and there not too bad. u'd be happy for the time being.

By factory bows what do you mean? Fiberglass like the Indians?
As for pro shops, apart from LeBaron (which has no longbows) and Bass Pro (which I didn't see any stocked longbows), can you think of any?
I'm in Toronto, if there are any good pro shops that do this elsewhere in Canada, have they got any websites?

Thanks in advance.

You could try archer's nook in London.

Hey Greg,

Not too sure about shops that may be closer to you, but I know a place called the Wolf's Den that is supposed to be excellent. I say "is supposed to be" because I've never been there personally.

If you want something closer, try one of the Ontario boards like:

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll surely be calling up the smaller shops asking around for longbows.

What I'm thinking my best bet would be through word of mouth.. going to archery ranges, the shops (where the hardcore hunters hangout, thats the case with the archery shop in Brampton. heh) and asking the guys if they know anyone that might have an old longbow wasting space...

Either that or finding a local bowyer and offering either funds/materials/help or a combination of those to try to get a bow made. On that note, anyone know -Any- bowyers in and around the Toronto area?

Has anyone had any experiences with http://www.oldbow.com/longbow_index.htm ?
Specifically the 129$ and below ones.

For the price range you are looking at contact Jim at www.Rudderbows.com
He has some bows in the price you are looking at.I also did a review on his Penobscott last year.It is in my trad Review section.

Bloody brilliant! That's just about perfect!

So there you have it folks,
www.rudderbows.com.
One of the many hidden sources of inexpensive longbows.
Thanks Pete.

Has anyone had any experience with them and their bows apart from the Penobscott?

Found another!

http://www.woodbows.com/

Even less expensive then the Rudderbows.. likely due to the fact that they come unfinished which is barely a problem. I love woodworking, and the fact that I can sand and stain to whatever I prefer is Very appealing!

(I'm not too sure about rudderbow's imposing Evangelical themes throughout the site and banners. Seems a touch over-the-top)

You can also check out e-bay, Dan Quillian has some unfinished bows for sale. He has a great name in archery, he's also very sick with diabetes and the associated problems with that...amputations etc. I'm sure he can use the money as much as anyone else.

I hope he's doing well
