I've been thinking about ordering this digital tree camera, but it's so cheap compared to most digital tree cams i've seen. Take a look at this website and tell me if you think its a good deal http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=168168

Nope, I would not buy it. The camera is a 0.3 Megapixal Camera. You are going to get get extremely low quality pictures.
Greg Potyok, who builds camera here in Alberta and is a Bowzone member uses 1.3 Megapixal Cameras, so the resolution is over 4 times better. His website is www.treebarkcameras.com
Here is a sample of one of his pics

Yup...those are good.
(secret from SHOT show) Bushnell is coming out with some amazing digital game cameras. I saw them when I was down there last week and they are awesome! I will see if I can find some info on them.....

haha im sure those treebarkcameras are great but i'm not looking at investing almost $600 into one.
warden when you said "yup those are good" were u talking about cdnarcher's reply of the treebarkcamera or the camera on sportsmansguide that I have a link to?
If anyone knows of some good offers on digital treecams please inform me cuz I'd really like one, just don't have the money!

No I don't live nearby, I actually live in South Dakota nd i think i'd rather but one than make one.
Does anyone by chance have an example of a .3 megapixal pic? I'm rly not too picky on crispness of a pic, just need to count the antlers

Here is a Treebark Digital picture from last summer.
Just to show how much detail is actually on a 1.3 megapixel picture.
The camera too has a lot to do with quality. The Olympus is great.

Hi Scott,
It's been a busy year or so. I should have been popping in more often.
I'll pick up a bit on that here soon.
I have both the Calgary and Edm Boat /Sportsman trade shows coming up soon, So it will be a busy Feb - March too.

Whitetailer,
You were wondering about what 0.3 meg pixel would be like. If you take a peek at one of those cell phone cams, you'll get the idea as they are 0.3 mpixs. They don't look too bad as long as the picture stays in a small format but I don't think they would be too good enlarged.
There's not too much info on the camera that you posted the link to. But let's say you bought one and it turned out to be a dud, in all likelyhood, you could adapt a real digital into it. The case and the rest of the components might be workable.
Maybe one of us psuedo camera builders may take that one on or perhaps a more qualified technician (Gpo) may jump at that.

Well what do you think? I'm thinking about one of the two on this website. One is a 1.3 megapixel that can hold 56 pix at low resolution, the other is a 3.0 megapixel that can hole 100 nd some. Of course theres other diferences, but the price diferences $100. I'm really leaning towards the cheaper one unless someone convinces me the 2nd one is worth the money!
Thanks for all your opinions.

For all you guys that will be at the Calgary and Edmonton Boat and Sportsmans shows in Feb and March.
There will be a raffle for a Treebark Digital Game Camera and a large Gun Safe.
I will be working at these shows.
I agreed to team up with the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors Assoc (AHEIA /WISE) to sponsor their spring fund raising raffle. One prize is a large gun safe, and the other is my digital unit that I donated. I'll be in their booth running a slideshow presentation, answer questions and showcase my Digital Cameras. This should help sell tickets for their group. I'll get great exposure too.
If some of you guys will be at the Calgary show, come by and say hi. Booth C-10 beside the kids fish tank and minnow races.
The Calgary show is on Feb 9 -12. And March 17 - 20 in Edmonton.
Oh and March 2 - 4 in Red Deer.

 ordered the 1.3 tree Stealth Cam on the website a couple of replies up. Ordered it Monday the 7th and got it the Thursday the 10th! It exceeds my expectations. Tested it out tonight.
You can program to shoot one, two, or three pix at a time or a 10 second video (even though the video only works during the day). You have a choice of high, medium, or low resolution pix. Very crisp pix even on low resolution. With the right memory card you can get up to about 2500 pix at one time on low resolution. I can't see why you would need so much but the option is there. Probably the coolest part is you can hook it up to your t.v. and go through all your pix. Gives you much better detail than on the computer monitor.
Going out tomorrow to set it in some trees. Can't wait to post some pix I get!

I just purchased a Digital Camtrakker this fall and would HIGHLY recommend it, if you want TOP quality photos.
Be prepared to pay though, as it is an American company.....in excess of $1000, but well worth it!
I'm already saving for a second unit.

razortech,
You can't beat that one for sure.
Top end for sure. Price & quality go hand & hand.
whitetailarecher.
You'll get good pictures with the Stealth. Watch the battery life though, that is one drawback on that unit, from what I've heard. Some say one week only, depends on # of pictures though.

going to go out tomorrow to retreive the film from my stealth cam, its been out since the 18 of Mar.Will let you know how they turned out and try to guess how long the batt's lasted.I use rechargables so it does not cost as much.
I won one of those Camedia d-360l digital cameras in the home lottery about three or four years ago..
I may have got a lemon, but it has been very undependable, it has completly craped out twice on me, I have it here in front of me, but it should be in the garbage, because it still doesn't work.
Mine was a piece of sh$t, but that doesn't mean they all where.
It did take real nice pictures though, I used it an my camps, and took it to Disneyland..
Can anyone fix digital camera's

I won a digital trail camera in a photo contest the other day.
It's a 2.0 megapixel Leaf River DC-1.
I should have it in a week or so. I read up on it a bit.
Takes lots of batteries, 4 "D"s and 3 "C"s. They say it will last a month.
I'll see just how it works.
It uses a Compact Flash card, but no way to view within the unit.
I have an adapter from CF to SD so I can use my Palm pilot to view.

And another.
These 2 pictures show the flash range of the digital pretty well.
The odd-ball buck is out at apprx 4 yards, and the big guy is at about 9 yards,
which is about where the flash bottoms out.

Those are pretty good pictures, that first one has some weird antler growth that second one is nice. The quility is the same as the 35mm,and I don't know how far out the flash is good for,I only got a few night shots and there all close. My pictures are boring compared to those.

Over the last 3 - 4 weeks, I've tested the Leaf River DC-1 digital trail camera 2.1 megapixel. And I may be a little biassed LOL, but I was not impressed in some of the areas. You can set it up to do 5 second video clips, but this disables the night time picture ability, and the clips are fairly slow, jittery frames.
But the picture mode is not bad, not as crisp as some other units, but acceptable, and the flash range is better than most.
The one draw back I saw was it took about 7 seconds for the camera to power up and take a picture, so not a very good camera for a trail application, but it would be Ok for a bait or scrape setting.

I know the price of the Camtrakker scares most people away, but with 4.1 megapixels the pictures are AWESOME.

These 2 curious critters stopped by my trail camera.
This clip is from the Leaf River DC-1bu
The unit was set to video mode with some stinky fish scraps layed out. These moose didn't seem to want to walk by, they were looking for a way to go around.

Hey Scott, did you ever get any more info on the Bushnell cameras? My wife let it out of the bag that she was planning on getting me a tree cam for Christmas and she wanted to know if the Bushnell Trail Scout VGA was any good. I don't know how the VGA compares to the others that Bushnell make which are 1.3 MP I believe.
Does anybody have any experience with the Bushnells?

Oops...I forgot to answer this one. Here's what I think about the bushnell cameras.
1. Easy to use.
2. take video and still pics
3. have IR and regular flash for stills.
4. Pics are great.
5. No noise at all...
6. need a better seal design for the battery compartment..but it's not bad.
I give it 9 outta 10 stars. I like mine alot.

Thanks Scott,
Do you think it is worth the extra money for the night vision model? I've heard people claim that the flash doesn't spook deer, but I'm a little skeptical about that.
Also, any idea where the cheapest place to buy that one would be?
Thanks again for the info.

I gotta call BS on the flash not spooking deer ...... Have you ever seen a nite pic from a trail cam that uses a flash where the animal is not looking directly at the camera?????
ya me neither
Nite Vision is real nice but most models have a green haze .... Its the low light enhancements built into camera that makes it that way .... alot now are Black and white low light cameras .....
some time next week I want to get out and test a new light source that i have with critters .... Its actually below the UV and IR spectrum(so humans and I assume animals cant see it) but some digital processor cams will pick it up and make the image look like daylight in B&W

Here is a list of reviews of some of the most common trail cameras.
If yours is the Moultrie digital gamespy, there are 2 reviews on it.
Doesn't sound like this one guy was very happy with it.
The other guy gave it a 3 out of 5.

Under Reader reviews, click on "Search review database", then go to Trail cameras.
