Good morning to all,
I admit it I have a mental problem... and need help!
Here is the scenario-
Early 90's got into 3d shooting. Always had problems over 30 yards.
Mid 90's work changed and no more time for archery.
Now have time and have returned to archery with all of the interest of a 4year old in a candy store... with the same problem as 10 years ago. Over 30 yards I shoot like a bull in a china shop. So 2 days ago I went to see a life-time archer for some help. I thought it must be in the bow. NOT. The same affliction that had me before has me now. When I was at Mr. Lubben's home he went over the bow then tuned it and handed it over to me.At 20 yds I was at a 6" group and wasn't impressed. As he watched he could actually see I was torquing the bow. We tried several things and the one thing that seemed to work was a finger sling. Oh and constantly telling myself I wouldn't drop the bow post release. With the f-sling and the mental work I got down to sliding arrows beside each other in about 5 arrows. Now I can see where in target shooting I could get away with this but in the real world... For hunting I can't see a f-sling being any good, and I believe hunting is where we ALL should be the most accurate as possible. So my question I suppose is this- What can I do? Yes I have a mental problem alright. Admitting it is hard but I NEED HELP!!!

When all else fails don't hit it with a hammer, shoot it with an arrow!

Hey Daffy,

I used to shoot a back tention carter all year in competition, and then as hunting season approched I would switch all my gear to "hunting" gear,
and found the results were disapointing,
I couldn't make a caliper release to save my life,so I decided to start hunting with my carter and have never looked back.

My point is If you can make it work for the target you can probably make it work for hunting, I did.

If you have a problem with bow tourque, Try and remove any grip aid on your bow, and have your hand right on the riser, some of the wooden or rubber grips can force your hand to pre-load the bow.

  I think we all have metal problems dont feel left out. Just take in all the info people give you apply it to your shooting and see what point work for you and keep useing them. Not all the info you will get will work for you but alot will this is why it takes a long time and alot of pratice to become a good shooter. Good Luck and I hope for shooting comes together for you.

I think this comes from confidence as well. A small 3d target a 35 yards is quite intimidating in a group of other shooters where you don't want to miss and loose or wreck an arrow. This becomes more difficult when they have all hit it and the pressure is on you to do the same. The thing that may help is trying some target archery shooting. With outdoor target archery you know what the distance is, the target is very large. You can get to know you can shoot a small group at say 55meters, so that ability you can bring to the 3d course. At very long distances your little mistakes in form will begin to so up more. As for the bow sling I use a wrist sling mounted to the bow for both hunting and 3d. It causes me no issues at all and I know I won't drop my bow. Try shooting very large targets over your thirty yards then gradually get smaller as your groups get tighter. Shoot the distances that your pins are set for so you can aim exactly where you want to hit and then work on you gap distances. A paper target gives you the ability to shoot for that yellow dot in the center. Here is a link to Bowzones printable targets.

It sounds like you already know the solution to your problem. If you can group so good with a finger sling then you should be able to duplicate that with a bow mounted wrist sling. Just get out there and apply that learning that was put on you by your instructor.

I have to agree with cdn-redneck in that you will definitely see an improvement in your shooting if you take up target archery. When you are shooting at a known distance at a spot that you can actually aim at, then there is really only one reason for a miss and that is the archer. This kind of activity will lead you to improvement.
