Well its question of the day time on the old forums.
I have been thinking about ways to get a flatter trajectory out of my arrows to be more precise in 3D shooting and I can come up with a couple of things which I think might help. Now what would help and what I can afford are two different things, so I will lay out my ideas to you guys and see what you think.

Idea one: New bow. My bow is older model with a non radical cam like you find now a days on the cam and a half type bows. I am assuming that the cam design along with the limbs has something to do with the speed of the bow and thus the flatter trajectory of the arrow.....New bows are expensive so probably not in the planning......Yet.

Idea two: Crank on the poundage. I am pulling 62# with my bow and its giving me about 240 fps. Plenty fast enough for hunting. I have had my bow cranked up to 73# at one time but I couldnt hold the draw for more than about 20 seconds and I would hate to think what pulling that much weight for two rounds of 3D would do to me....I wouldnt be able to raise my arms.....But it would work to flatten the trajectory.

Idea 3: Heres the one I have been mulling over quite a bit. Lighter arrows. I shoot Carbon excel 400's with 100 gr heads at 30 inches. that means the arrows are roughly 400 grains of weight to push downrange. I think that I could shorten them a touch and maybe use a 65 gr field point to shoot 3D with. That would definitely lessen the weight some and flatten the trajectory of the arrow. But what would it do to my hunting setup of my one and only bow?
Right now my bow is set up for hunting just the same way I set it up for 3D. And its working pretty good. And lets face it, its the hunting thats more important than the 3D. But I have had a great year at 3D shoots and want to become more competitive also.

So there it is boys, tell me what you think I should do. :?

If you're getting 240 out of a 400 grn arrow you should get alot more out of that bow.

I would suggest a whole new arrow .
The fatboy from easton is very similar to the arrow your shooting already but it is much lighter.

I shoot the Fatboy 500's with an 80 grn point . It wieghs 307 grns
and has a 10.5 % FOC. With a 2.5" vane

If you did this it woulnd't be much of a change to go back and forth between you hunting arrows and your compitition arrows.

And this won't kill you pocket book.

I Shoot two totally different arrows for hunting and comp.

Thanks for the reply sniper. I forgot to mention that I am shooting through a whisker biscuit, My string has cats whiskers on and I have limb savers a string loop and brass nock....All can rob me off speed so I am led to believe. And I shoot in hunter class so I believe that I need to have 4 inch vanes......Maybe I am destined to be lobbing them in????

Here's a possible solution for you. Buy new target arrows in the lightest weight you can get that will spine well and make 5grns/pound. Then get a new sight box and set it up for your 3d arrows. Keep your current sight box and arrows set up for hunting. When you want to switch from 3D to hunting or back again all you need to do is swap sight boxes and grab your other arrows. Its simple, quick and will get you what you want for each application without breaking the bank. I did this for several years when I only had one bow and wanted to hunt bear in the spring at the same time as 3D was going on, never had a problem.

Just a thought
