Hey there Traditionalists
Anyone out there that is still shootting wood shafts? if so
what kind of shafts do you use?
-port oxford cedar
-douglas fir
-pine
-sitkaspruce
Do you finish your own shafts, or do you buy them finished?
where do you get your shafts?
is there any really good arrowsmiths in canada?
I personally have purchased 3 Rivers POC shafts
they are fine but i am sure to find better
I am looking at the hexshafts for Vernon BC
Just curious

I've shot wood a lot since the 70's.....and aluminum , nothing flys as good as a good tapered wood shaft.
But, I shoot aluminum mostly now because they're more durable. But I plan to get some more woos arrows in the neatr future. Enjoy those woodies...they're great.
Given the price of wooden shafts these days I think a lot of the romance with wood is gone.

Yeah Russ, if I get some more I'l probably use them only for hunting...I do a lot of stump shootin, and woodies can be kinda fragile.
But, I do love the way a good quality tapered arrow flies.

You just have to shop in the right store.
I shoot wood on the self bows mostly, and have found the 5/16 Ramin is much tougher than cedar and spruce. They have good weight also. These are dirt cheap, and easy to straighten.
The other shafts I started using are Poplar. These come in 11/32 x36" length, straighten easy, and are tough and heavy.
www.git-r-donearchery.com in Calgary has a good stock of both.

Hey Pete...how is the consistency of the poplar shafts? I had some ramin wood shaftsa cpouple years back, and they seem to vary in consistency from shaft to shaft....but they are tough though.

Spine and weight always vary with wood unless you sort them or buy them sorted by spine and weight.
The poplar I have was not weight matched, Dennis sells them sorted by spine and weight.
The Ramin I have is good, but I bought a bundle of 200 and did my own sorting.

Do like my cedars and enjoy custom cresting them. Good winter fun when the snow flies.

I haven't shot any wood arrow before but how do you sort spine of a wood spine to suit a certain draw weight and length?

Edmond,
First spine and mark each shaft, then group them in order of the spine , 40 to 45 for example, then weigh each shaft and sort them by weight. Now you have shafts sorted by spine and weight.
